Those We Voted Poem by Victor Okechukwu Anyaegbuna

Those We Voted

Rating: ★4.8

Those that we trusted most,
And elected by our vote
Dealt devastating blows
That stunned our minds
And thrust us needlessly
Into economic poverty.

Those that we thought loved us
Stole our wealth and defied us
Like hungry thieves on the pussyfoot
Daring the dexterity of the cat
They imposed taxes to extort
And kill our power to fight.

They grew wings and away they flew
To foreign lands ‘fore the morning dew
To save their loot and hide their fault.
They filched away our land to inflate
And build mansions in havens boom
To enlarge, and yet hasten their doom

Those we looked upon to serve our sway
From the riddled highways, chased us away
With the menacing sirens and beeps
Of their land cruisers and jeeps
They dug holes on our paths
And splashed dirty water on our clothes

They drove around in luxurious cars
And gave us okada to break our legs.
With high profile criminals that rigged
Their way to power, they connived
And slaughtered our mentors who dared
To speak, or give us succour and aid.

Those that we blindly counted on
Defiled our hopes, broke our bone
And buried their fangs in our flesh.
They strengthened their fortress
With our corrupted Police and military
Sending us on the run, direly unwary.

They burnt our liberties and freedoms
In the fire of their greed and avarice.
They drowned our creativity
In the running waters of their adversity.
They polluted the air we breathe, and the rains
With the mess from their rotten brains.

Our pride and dignity, they buried
In the bowels of earth defiled
And raised lions in the name of Deus
To devour our protesting genius.
They rattled our dues and rights
Thus killing the dreams of our democracy

Those that we trusted to lead us
To the Promised Land betrayed us.
They destroyed our schools,
Rendered our hospitals comatose,
Wrecked our power provisions,
And betrayed our expectations.

But now, noble fate peeps
Like sunshine in dew
To assail the battered hopes
Of all, not just a few.
