POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Hans has been a top-notch chess player for a long time. He has won the Idaho championship more than once, and taken top honors in tournaments in Utah, Nevada and other western states. In 1964 he got a draw with Bobby Fischer when Bobby gave a simultaneous exhibition in Ogden, Utah.
In the Southern Idaho Open, held 14 November 2015 at Twin Falls, he won the first round, then lost in the second to Nick (see my poem NICK DOES THE TRICK) , a former student of mine. He won his game in the third round, then lost in the fourth to Jeff, who won the tournament with three and a half points. Nick finished with three points and in a tie for second, so Hans shouldn't feel too bad. He lost only to the man who took first and the man who took second, if you want to look at it that way. He finished with two points out of four.
For comparison, I lost two games also, but only won one and had one draw, for a score of one and a half points out of four.
