Chess Poem 02

My little Love, do you remember,
Ere we grew so sadly wise,
When you and I played chess together
Checkmated by each other's eyes?

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This is not my original work, but is from an Early English Valentine card, circa 1910. This is another poem I found in the book Master Pieces by Gareth Williams.
The notes in the book say:
'Indicating the romantic chess connection. Since the Middle Ages, chess was the only game allowed to be played between lovers without a chaperone.'

I am glad you shared both this poem from an Early English valentine circa 1910 and the tidbit about chess being the only game allowed to be played between lovers without a chaperon in attendance. I enjoy such tidbits and sometimes greeting card poetry is really extraordinarily well written
