Byron Headrick Poems

I’m sad today
(Not the day the storm came
Killing the poor and elderly)
BUT
...

Honey, wanna fly
Take a walk upon the steel rails – slide
Skidding, three-sixties the world turns below
Into fear. Wanna take a dive
...

I have not known the
Salty taste the ocean
Leaves settled in the
Mouths of drown victims
...

I wanna
Life like Vanilla
A little bland
But expected smooth
...

Fresh cut grass, hides the stink of
Hot asphalt at the street café, where
Four years earlier, I met Jennifer
Adjusting her bra, when no one saw
...

Starting over fresh, isn’t like starting.
The fear is the same, but less.
So is hope – NOT like getting
Your first apartment meeting
...

Last night
I walked in the moon light
Up fairway hills
Through sand traps
...

I’ve got a twisted view of
Pain and passion
Intertwined among the
Masses. I believe in
...

My friend thinks he can choose who to fall in love
With and Pounce De Leon years ago searched for
Youth in a fountain drink. My friend ties knots in
Straws frustrated that I disagree and Pounce De Leon
...

She says my body
Has been desecrated
By the ink that covers
My skin – the names of
...

Smoking cigars, drinking
Scotch, setting outside
Candle light night
Writing poetry – seems
...

I don’t know why
But all of a sudden
All
The poets
...

I remember the licking
Of sweat
The taste of you spent,
Easy
...

Like Messiah, a holder
Of truth and sight
Behind broken windows
Of souls the eyes she has
...

Charismatic like a James Bond Villian
(Not the main, but the one on the side,
The henchman)
That has made, his psychical deformity into
...

Why
Do some of us
Seldom take the time to ask the questions
Of who we are and where we are going
...

Like a shovel of sand over a hole, she can
Complete me and I her. Aged like wine
For the tongue of the other, made sweeter
Fortified with stout liquor. Enough to make
...

FEEL FREE!
To
Judge me
And
...

19.

Have
You
Touched someone today?
I ask you
...

She said
She hates
Modern sexual
Imagery

The Best Poem Of Byron Headrick

7 Days Later (Katrina 2005)

I’m sad today
(Not the day the storm came
Killing the poor and elderly)
BUT
7 days later
When I’m realizing
There are still babies living
Dieing
Because we as Americians
Didn’t act as fast as we should
As fast as we could
As fast as we did
Half the world away
When the water’s wave
Came
Drowning tourist and Asian resident
The same
This was different than Tsunami
THIS WAS DIFFERENT…
We had forewarning
Time for evacuation
Time for preparation
Yet it’s
7 days later
And I’m realizing
There are still babies living
Dieing

And I can’t help but
Wonder if
It has to do with the color
Of the babies skin
Or more likely
The fact
That
Their parent’s don’t have voting majority
(Otherwise known as money)
And I hate
That my mind
Contemplates
These thoughts….
I’ve heard the explanations
Excuses
Reasons
“Doing the best we can.”
Understand
Homeland security
When we refuse to
Accept the aid
Of foreign lands….
And even the Soviets had squadrons on stand by
Before the storm made land fall
Yet it’s
7 days later
And I’m realizing
There are still babies living
Dieing

The Muslims cry Allah’s retribution
The European’s simply “Tsk” and shake their heads
And
It’s a sad day for me
7 days later
Because I can’t explain this to my children
It’s a sad day for me
7 days later
Because I thought we were better than this
It’s a sad day for me
7 days later

BECAUSE

It is
The
First
Day
That
I’ve ever
Felt ashamed
To be an American
