BASAB CHAUDHURI Poems

Will you come to see me when I die?
I know I will die some day,
but the day is not known,
so I cannot invite you in advance.
...

The mailbox is full -
But the one that I have been waiting for,
Does not come.
What do I feel then?
...

This morning
words whispered in my ear—
give us a little space to thrive,
so we may become a poem.
...

4.

At this moment
bombs are exploding,
smoke billows outward,
people hide indoors,
...

Something works between us two
that neither of us knows for sure.
The road turns at the same time,
a flower starts to speak in rhyme.
...

So many roads in front of me,
For someone might make a difference.
I am now lost at the crossing—
Could you tell me the shortest route?
...

If you belong to everyone,
You belong to no one.
That's the design.
That's how it's built.
...

Often I leave my house and go elsewhere,
for work or for some job poorly defined.
I go -
there is no one to accomany me except the sky,
...

Get me a pen -
I will write with it
a love letter
to all of them.
...

A lovely fruit—
the pomegranate holds
punicalagins,
antioxidants,
...

How softly the bees touch the rose
absorb her fragrance - elsewhere goes,
A silky touch - doesn't look back,
unlike man, not carrying a sack.
...

Some day - near or far
Must be the last phone call,
Then either you or I
Much better if it is I...
...

A few steps forward and then coming back,
I pick up pebbles and carefully put them in my pocket -
just to throw them away later, may be a few minutes after
I accumulated them.
...

Newspapers have pretty much lost their importance now,
instant news are made available, every bit digital.
Continuous crunching of digits make sensation
with continuous munching of an appropriate material.
...

Not to write is a choice -
A painful choice.
So I write -
Even when words are hard to come by
...

He asked me, 'How are you doing? '
Although I was not feeling too well,
I said, 'I am doing fine.'
He was smart and could sense,
...

Every fold I turn, there is excitement
But folds are unending and the excitement far-reaching.
Fingers become tired, hands too
but unfolding doesn't stop.
...

I watch the cursor, it watches me -
Nothing worthwhile comes to mind
My fingers still move upon the keyboard
A search into the well for words continues.
...

পিতা সনে যদি কহি
কিছু সত্য কথা,
অগ্নিশর্মা পিতা কন
এত বড় কথা!
...

A cup of coffee
Milk skin floats on top
Others drink wine
Enjoy the music and pop.

Will You Come To See Me?

Will you come to see me when I die?
I know I will die some day,
but the day is not known,
so I cannot invite you in advance.
Yet, if you get time, please come,
just to see me for a few minutes.
Please do not bring flowers,
allow them to be in the trees,
they look so fresh there
in company of the leaves.
What will you do when you stand before me?
Will you be sad that I cannot greet you?
All my warmth will go, I know -
Ice-cold, I will look very firm,
but I suppose I will look composed
in your company.
A dead man, laden with history, has no future.
Laden or burden - I am in doubt,
I ask you now as I am up on my legs,
and can still paint a picture of my death.

I am not a pessimist,
this is realism that I describe,
I invite you to come when I die
as death is the ultimate celebration of life that ever was,
and will never be afterwards.
