Anxious eyes peer into night
at a road lit up by neon light.
The sounds dim, the hospital sleeps,
Somewhere a vigilant monitor beeps.

Watch and wait, watch and wait
an Angel stands at Heaven's gate

smooth and remove.
They will cultivate the wildness and soon

I live in Ireland now. I'm a mother and a grandmother but used to be a girl and a young woman once upon a time! I haven't written much poetry lately but I've enjoyed reading it so much I think I might give it another go!)

Night Watch

Anxious eyes peer into night
at a road lit up by neon light.
The sounds dim, the hospital sleeps,
Somewhere a vigilant monitor beeps.

A ventilator breathes in and out
as in our ward the lights go out.
A siren wail disturbs the night,
Emergency teams prepare for flight.

Far above in the dark we lie,
whispering prayers with sleepless eye.
As nurse with soft and quiet tread
Keeps watchful eye on every bed.

Her confident reassurance keeps
the demons from our restless sleep.

Early sun dispels the gloom
as cheery day crew invade the room
and morning makes all doubts disperse
Thank God for day;
and thank you nurse.
