From earth's dark womb, the dormant seed awakes,
It breaks the night and lifts a pallid eye.
On trembling leaves, a whispered world it makes,
While fledgling wings lay claim upon the sky.
A rapture surges upward through the boughs,
Yet roots descend where light is dark and dense.
The scorching sun, which nothing bright allows,
Inscribes in knotted bark its secret sense.
Till autumn's hand announces soft decay,
And leaves like letters drift beyond the shore;
Where all is lost, and fades so far away,
The crown it wore, now lost for evermore.
At last, the trunk sinks back to earth so deep,
Where thought itself dissolves in dreamless sleep.
