In God's Name Poem by Annalee Somerville

In God's Name

Rating: ★5.0

In the creaking of the farmhouse,
footsteps drawn near,
my heart pounded louder
with every echo of fear.

The door creaked open,
beady eyes peered inside,
hollow whispers lingered,
and, I held my breath to hide.

A cross above my bed,
offered little hope,
Gods silence was deafening,
I was left alone to cope.

Fingers felt like gritty oil,
breath heavy with decay,
The night was like a coffin,
I prayed would take me away.

Nights blurred through the day,
their touch consumed my mind,
I counting every second,
praying to God to let me die.

Running off to church they'd go,
Asking God to forgive.
God gave them absolution,
And my body marked their sins.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Religious and ritual abuse leave wounds that reach far beyond childhood. When harm is carried out under the name of God, it distorts trust, safety, and the meaning of faith itself. I wrote this poem after learning that one of my abusers had died, a moment that brought not closure, but a surge of old fear and unresolved emotion. This piece is my way of naming what was done and acknowledging the lifelong impact of spiritual betrayal, and the reality of having to build my own faith from the ground up. For anyone who has lived through similar abuse, your experience is real, and your voice matters.

Abusing action in the name of God is most heinous crime. As you said ,it breaks the very foundation of faith. It goes far beyond childhood memories and leaves the life scarred till the end.

This heart-wrenching poem should be read by all abusers and survivors. Annalee, you've done an amazing job in expressing the fear and anger and the other emotions experienced by a survivor.
